Tuna Fishing

Fishing for Blue Fin Tuna is a new and very exciting fishery from the Cornish coast.

South West Handline Fishermen Association

Aquila is a registered fishing vessel with the numbers FY324 and member of the South West Handline Fishermen Association (SWHFA). TAG No. is TAG64.

As the Vice Chairman of the South West Handline Fishermen’s Association (SWHFA), I was heavily involved in negotiations with Defra in 2021 and 2022, aiming to establish a commercial Bluefin tuna fishery in the UK. Despite Defra’s initial reluctance due to the absence of a Fisheries Management Plan (FMP), I undertook the task of crafting a comprehensive FMP for a pilot fishery.

After months of meticulous refinement and collaboration with the other SWHFA officers, we presented a compelling proposal to Defra, seeking an allocation of 25 tonnes for a fleet of 10 vessels. Positive indications during subsequent meetings suggested the potential for a full Pilot Fishery, only to witness a last-minute pivot by Defra, who initiated a pilot of their own, mirroring our proposal with 39 tonnes across 10 vessels.

This plan then faced scrutiny from the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). winning favour in March we knew the commercial fishery was going to go ahead. After months of anticipation waiting for DEFRA to work out who would get to be involved, success was secured a mere two weeks before the season’s commencement. i was blown away to for find out we had obtained a coveted license to capture and commercialize 3.9 tonnes of Bluefin Tuna. This triumph not only underscores our collective tenacity but also highlights the fusion of strategic acumen and commitment to sustainable fisheries management.

My efforts are now looking to aid with the future of the fishery and to secure a licence again for 2024.

When we are not chartering we are fishing commercially for Mackerel or Tuna

The SWHFA was originally set-up to represent the many mackerel hand line boats fishing in SW England and in 2000, the Association was one of the first to receive accreditation from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for the SW Handline Mackerel Fishery.

Today, the members fish for mackerel almost 12-months of the year. We tend to fish at dawn and dusk using lines of 25 or 30 hooks baited only with brightly coloured feathers or plastic tubing.

We take great care to ensure that the fish we catch reaches the market in peak condition. As soon as the fish are brought onto the boat we store them in a ‘slush-ice’ mix to bring the core temperature of the fish to 0oC as soon as possible. fish such as Pollack and Bass are Tagged with the boats own tags to show the buyer that their fish has been sustainably caught and are in top condition.
